In a number of cultures, incluidng Renaissance Italy and Saxon England,
unmarried women generally wore their hair uncovered. They might have
elaborate hairdressing styles, but they didn't always put a covering over
it. In some cases, unmarried women would wear a covering (Gothic Germany)
but let their hair hang down under it.
Men are also pictured hatless in some situations.
