You are mistaken. Copyright violation is a CRIMINAL offense, may carry jail
time or a fine, and will leave you with a record. You do NOT want to get
prosecuted for something as dumb as copyright violation. And, while I'm
certain we're all upstanding citizens, a charge of copyright violation will
count as a strike under California's "three strikes" law - I don't know
which other states have similar laws. In the recent enviornment engendered
by the Napster controversy, you may well see an increase in prosecutions for
copyright violation.
