Well, speaking from the funeral point of view, you leave the leftovers,
because the various relations that are gathered will need things to eat
once all the proceedings are over. Honestly, you really don't associate
the leftovers with affliction, or at least I don't think any of us did.
You're too exhausted to really think about anything, at that point.

In your case, where you've brought the food to start with, I wouldn't have
any problems bringing some of the leftovers home. You might have to leave
some for your mother, or split some with siblings, but I know my family
wouldn't have a problem with the provider of the food taking the rest of
it back home.
