Back when I was planning the wedding that never happened (because we got
fed up with the various family politics involved in the planning, and
eloped), Mom got me a book about wedding planning with no budget, which
included instructions on how to make your own ice sculpture.

The author's suggestion for keeping things from floating, as most
vegetable matter is wont to do, was to put a very small amount of water in
to begin with, enough to hold the objects but not enough for them to
actually float, and freeze that first. Then you could put in more water,
and more stuff if you wanted, but that was her tip for keeping things
where you wanted them.

Margaret, who has that castle cake pan from Wilton and is now thinking it
might make a really keen mold for an aspic...
