to discourage an *individual* from donating, because of reasons relevent to them. is not an issue.

to discourage *anyone* to donate, just because you dont like blood products, is to condemn people to death.

my dad would not be alive, right now, if he had not gotten platelets. (not mine, unfortunately) he went through heart surgery with no blood needed, but his platelets crashed to near zero in a reaction to the blood thinner.
he turned out to not react well to heparin, but as he had never had it before, it didnt turn up on the allergy screen. he was fine for about 4 days.... then BOOM, platelet crash.

he would be dead if people hadnt donated.

  Actually, _I_ was actively discouraged from donating. I have small veins that tend to roll, even to the point of pulling away from the needle if you can believe one nurse. I was asked several times to avoid donating, so eventually I did.

  Of course, since the Atkins thing, I now weigh about what I did in Jr.  High School.... might try again soon <G>. I still have the small veins, but there's less arm for them to hide in.
