Duchess Alys here in the Midrealm has been a strong proponent and 
supporter of authentic period cooking.

I think it's just a case of the dichotomy that's as old as the SCA 
itself.  Some members are in it for the authenticity, some for the fun, 
and most for a mix of the two.  Royalty, being drawn from the 
membership, is going to reflect this ideological diversity.
