It seems to be an Eastern Mediterranean tradition to slip little
delicacies to good customers.

In high school, my boyfriend was jealous because a shop worker who
spoke very little English in a Greek food store in Chicago slipped me
some nougat and dried apricots (directly into my mouth - this is
traditional)

A shop owner in New York City back in the late 1960s used to give me
little tidbits of stuff.

It's good to hear the traditional continues.
