Plot points work, eh? ;-)
I think that there is of course a couple of reasons why Dumbledore didn't
kill Voldemort- for one, I'm not sure that he can, because the prophecy
indicates of Harry and Voldemort that one must die at the hand of the
other. Does this mean that other parties cannot kil either of them? And
also, remember how Dumbledore said that there are things worse that death?
Was that for Voldemort's benefit (Since Voldemort has been trying for years
to be immortal) or for Harry's? Once Harry learns not to fear death, he
gains a great power over Voldemort- if you're not afraid to die, then what
have you to lose? Would you want to face an opponent who will either kill
you or die trying?

Voldemort only heard part of the prophecy, and understood that a boy was
born at the end of July that would have the power to vanquish him.
Voldemort, thinking that if he killed the one who had the power, likely
surmised that then no one could kill him, yes? But he didn't know about the
part that the boy had powers that he knew not... and going off with half of
the information, didn't know what he was facing.

And I do think that we have more surprises in store about Harry and his
powers, and his 'special protection'. I really want behind that one door in
the Department of Mysteries...
