That can vary locally as well, especially if you live in a 
"dry" county like some states have.

Word of mouth is the worst enemy.  Most judges will issue a search
warrant if they find reasonable grounds.  Some states (like GA) restrict
the amounts you can have on hand at any given point in time fo a few 
gallons.  This can be even further complicated by regulations at the 
county level as well. 

Most states will confiscate anything over the "storage amounts." and then
do anything in between jail time and/or destruction/sale of the produced
alcohol and stuff used to make it.

If they prove you made over 200 gallons.....that is a felony.

No one wants a felony for controlled substances on their record.
