        I think that the expressions 'Dutch uncle' and 'Dutch treat' go back 
to the period when the British were fighting/competing with the Dutch for 
control of the spice trade and ocean routes.  This would have been around Charles 
II's time... before Mary married William? Definitely before they ruled 
together.  No documentation, just vague memories.
     Similar in a way to 'on the fritz' and 'jerry built' from the World 
Wars.
