I could be wrong, but I get the impression you may be putting the
etymological cart before the horse. I think "fegato" is an Italian
word denoting "liver", with numerous liver dishes having that root in
common to their names. I think the English dish of "faggots"
(whatever way one interprets this word) is probably an Italian
import, and presumably doesn't refer specifically to bundles of wood,
cigarettes, or whatever.
