So my question is, could you buy indulgences to let you drink wine
during Lent? Was it even restricted, or am I thinking too modernly
about alcohol?

Yours,

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, wine was restricted in Lent "during the early centuries".

I've seen quite a few medieval Lenten recipes that call for wine. In de Nola, the recipe for Lamprey in Crust contains wine.
