Portia is her name, and she's one of the main characters in "The Merchant 
of Venice."  You can read it on-line at 
http://www.classicreader.com/booktoc.php/sid.5/bookid.157/.  She is a lady 
whose hand is sought in marriage by a number of suitors (including 
Bassanio), who must pass a test (choose the casket with her picture in 
it).  Later in the play she masquerades as a judge to save the life of 
Antonio, the merchant of the title, who had taken the offer of pledging a 
pound of flesh as surety for a loan (and then his ships didn't come in).
