Actually it works pretty well and leads to a moist, well cooked turkey. 
The main disadvantage is that it can be expensive as all that oil can 
be more expensive than the turkey. Here it is usually done outside in a 
big pot on top of a "Cajun" cooker. In fact, they sell complete kits 
for this here. Pot, cooker, butane burner etc.
