I recall reading (no, I don't remember where or when ... I'm 
happy that I remember this anecdote at all <g>) ... 

Somewhere in Colonial New England (might have been Boston) 
someone was selling rancid butter as good.  

The crock was filled with bad butter and covered (concealed 
by intention) by a layer of fresh butter on top.  It must 
have been the custom to do a freshness check before purchase.  

He might not have been there every day, but did get away with 
it for quite a while at that market.  

... but people gossip, talk, trade stories ... become more 
alert ... 

Eventually, he was caught ... and got justice on the spot.
