[Sca-cooks] Cake Sotelties

Christmas? Not a ding-donged thing. The rich-and-young end of the family
(sister, BIL, and sister's MIL) decided that they "needed" a week in
Honolulu this year, and they're the only in-state family I've got. ;o( They
were kind enough to invite me, as well, but do I look like someone who's got
the freedom to spend two months' salary on a whim???? (well....just *maybe,
if it involved truly serious historical-fu, or museum-fu, but that much
money for a beach? sheez! I'll wait for summer.....)
There's a small group of us (all SCA) without much in the way of genetic
family that have made a nice custom of going to one particular (and
wonderful) restaurant on Christmas Eve for several years now, but
unfortunately, the restauranteur has retired and the restaurant has closed.
*snivel, sigh, snivel* We're still going to do the silly presents part, but
had to switch to the 23rd, and a different restaurant. It's a local sort-of
asian fusion place. Good food, but not as special or wonderful as Perugia
was. <grump>
If I were planning a purely-theoretical Christmas dinner, though, I think
I'd do venison with sauces. And frumenty. Or one of those lovely, rich,
fruity dishes that show up in late-period cookbooks. (Hmmm....that gives me
ideas for the work potluck in a couple of weeks....I sense the need to make
Capon Cooked in Mrs Duffield's Way....mmmmmmm)
--Maire, off to a waterless morning...which I think entitles me to a nice,
hot espresso at the very least ;o)
