I'm the same way with sweet potatos (yeah, I know, I live in the entirely
wrong state to have this aversion. I also dislike sweet tea).
I can't get past the taste and texture of them, I can eat them, but I
do not like it.
Strangely, I can eat them deep fried as sweet potato chips, but anything
that is chipped and fried is nothing like the original. I also can't eat yams.

My Dad finally broke it to my step mom that I don't like yams or sweet potatos.
She kept making them year after year for holiday dinners 'cause she thought I
loved them because I always eat them. (I can eat anything in a small portion to
be polite, years of training with my sister's cooking)

And yeah, I go back and retry.
