Sweet peppers are Capsicum annuum, commonly called bell pepper, although
there are a number of varietals. The sweet banana pepper is one of the
varietals. It is referred to as sweet to distinguish it from the Hungarian
wax pepper AKA the hot banana pepper.
Paprika is also a member of C. annuum.
Usually when a recipe calls for sweet pepper, it is a reference to bell
peppers. Specialty varietals such as banana peppers and paprika are
referred to by their common name.
