Could be it is just one of those arts that the SCA exposes you to that you might not have thought about otherwise.  I know if it wasn't for SCA brewers, I never would have thought to take it up.  I hadn't met anyone who brewed and really didn't give it much thought.  Of course, if I hadn't had a really good SCA friend tell me to go ahead and start to embroider that first full Palestinian dress, I would probably just be embroidering smaller American-style samplers and admiring the dresses at belly dance festivals...
