Anyway, other than the ubiquitous and all-pervasive Gatorade, what
commercial brands have people tried that are tolerable - not to
artificially chemically in flavor, and not too fluorescent?

I'll second the recommendation for Emergen-C by Alacer.  They are wonderful,
come in a variety of flavors, and are mildly sweet without extra sucrose.  I
think they have a bit of fructose, but it isn't very much.
