When used in smallish quantities as was more common earlier in period, sugar
becomes more of a flavor enhancer than a sweetener.  Sort of like using salt
in sweet dishes.  It rounds out the flavor profile of the raspberries and
engages more of the tongue's sensors in the experience . . . more complex
flavors and more for the tongue to do while not being overtly sweeter.
