[Sca-cooks] Rant: And speaking of cooking equipment...

Adamantius,

I personally have noticed that once a subject becomes a "popular hobby" the
prices of the items needed for it tend to increase exponentially. For
example, I consider myself an Amateur herbalist, and prefer to grow my own
herbs, but this is not always possible. Looking around, many of the items
supposedly "required" by a good herbalist tend to have within the past few
years gone up quite a bit. I was looking for a good Mortar and pestle not
too long ago, and it was very difficult to find anything that wasn't either
way too small for my needs, or outrageously expensive.

My husband loves to cook, has cooked professionally in the past, but no
longer does so. When we look at pots, pans, etc that he feels he needs or
wants to cook with, we often find that what's available is either cheap and
not what we want, or what we want, but outrageously expensive. I do blame
the cooking channel on this as it has made cooking a "popular hobby" and the
cooks on the channel tend to make cooking fancy stuff look and seem very
easy for the beginner. I expect it to be fairly short lived as more people
realise that the TV cooks have been doing this for years, and that it's not
as easy as they make it look. Yes, a few people may find cooking a
wonderful new hobby, but the majority will get bored and burn out and go on
to the next popular hobby to crop up. And hopefully at that point, the
prices of things will go back down.
