I read somewhere (no documentation, of course) that Sir Kay was the seneschal, the person involved with organizing the hall and taking care of - what else? - visiting minstrels. The author suggested that some of the bad press he got was ministrels getting back at various seneschals who had treated them less than politely or generously.

Unfortunately, this is a very familiar sort of thing.... tarring all of a group with the same brush because you're annoyed with one of them.
