Absolutely!  One of the things that sold us on our in-many-ways 
"unique" 50's tract house 20 yrs ago was seeing the bearing beams 
under the house...  my recollection from being under there stringing 
the satellite line from one end of the house to the other, is that 
they are about 8x18 (!), set on concrete piers, and run the entire 
length of the (admittedly) small house!  We tend to find the bearing 
walls and run the bookshelves along them.
