They're sufficiently close to make some assumption of cognates hard to ignore, so either there was a minor linguistic flub or any of several regional variations at work; not enough to make me say, no, that's wrong...

But yes, blini are a traditional Russian pancake dish, usually somewhat different from the standard Ashkenazik blintzes, but not so different that I'd deny any connection...
