Look at the picture "The Bean Eater" by Annibale Carracci,
clearly black eyed peas, although it's quite late period.  Dating 
from 1580-1590 (probably 1583-1585),

It is likely, although not proven that in Rumpolt,  "Bonen" means 
cowpeas.  (There are other words for chickpeas).
