It has been around but I don't think it was as popular as it seems to be
today. I would say it is at least been around since the tobasco dare. I
remember a few kids daring but only one trying it back in the `70s in my
school. Perhaps it has become popularized through the internet and the
media's coverage of it.

We were discussing cinnamon not too long ago and the age problems of
true cinnamon and cassia.

This Cinnamon Challenge came up on the early morning programs here
this week. In case you haven't heard, the Cinnamon Challenge is a
"popular dare game that involves attempting to swallow a tablespoon of
cinnamon without vomiting or inhaling the powder." It can be dangerous
as you can inhale the cinnamon into your lungs. Teens have been
hospitalized; one locally spent four days in the hospital because of
breathing problems. Apparently this new dare/challenge is making the
rounds and is featured on YouTube.

Wikipedia says it has been around for decades but I don't remember
ever hearing about it prior to this latest flurry of news coverage.
