Greetings from Solveig! It may be possible that your quest for a more savory pretzel may simply be a product of a historical shift in attitudes toward what is healthy and what is nutritious. These shifts can even happen over comparatively short periods of time. There have been several food culture fads over the course of my life. I enjoy listening to Old Time Radio. Just a moment ago, they played a commercial during the Red Rider program for Langendorf Bread where they bragged about how it contained dextrose. As I recall, sugar in various forms was at various times considered medicinal.
