Are you asking what was placed ON the table before the people sat down? 
Or, what a server might have brought in to the person along with the 
food and then was placed ON the table?

Some responses are about the spicing used IN a dish before it goes in to 
the eater.

For the first, what was ON the table before people entered the dining 
hall, one can look at paintings/drawings to see if anything was there. 
I'm curious about what the question was really asking.
