>And if the fist master Alebrans of Florence, in the year of the incarnation Jhesu Crist M.CC.LVI years ». On this date, medicine has recently become a university discipline in some cities of northern >Italy, like in Paris and Montpellier. It is now recognized that medical practice must be based on theoretical knowledge, on a knowledge of the functioning of the human body. The university doctor is >no longer defined simply as a therapist called in the emergency of the disease; he wishes to become the counselor of daily life and the health curator. In this perspective, the writing of regimes (most >often in Latin) was established in the 13th century and increased in the late Middle Ages.

>Aldebrandin is the first to compose a diet in the vernacular. He chooses French, when it is not his mother tongue. If some copyists of his work qualify him as Florentine, others make him a Sienese, >which is more likely. No doubt came in the wake of the bankers and merchants who stayed in Champagne on the occasion of major fairs, he settled in Troyes, where he appeared among the >witnesses of a notarial act in 1277. He wrote his will in 1287 and died ten years later (between 1296 and 1299). Nothing indicates whether he did his medical studies in an Italian university or in >Paris.

>He himself had titled his work, designed to popularize knowledge, Book of phisike (that is to say, Book of medicine ): the title Régime du corps was the work of later copyists. Similarly, a dedication to >Beatrice of Savoy, Countess of Provence and stepmother of King Louis IX, was added apocryphally in the years 1257-1261. Following a four-part plan, Aldebrandin gives health rules for the whole >body and for each of its parts, then lists the qualities of one hundred and seventy-three foods, ending with considerations of physiognomy. Kept in more than seventy manuscripts, subject to multiple >modifications and abbreviations, printed in Lyon from 1481, the phisike Bookwas translated into Catalan, Flemish, Latin and, above all, four times into Italian. One of its Italian versions was >composed in 1310 by the Florentine notary Zucchero Benvicenni.

I've not heard of this book?, manuscript? before.

When was it written? In France, I assume?

As usual, I'm happy to host such translations in the Florilegium.

Thanks,
     Stefan
