Wessex, Essex, and Sussex are regions of Britain that were settled by 
the Saxons (along with Angles and Jutes) during the dark ages.  They 
originally meant West Saxons, East Saxons, and South Saxons, just as 
Norfolk comes from North Folk.  Cornwall comes from Corn Welas, the 
"foreigners who grow corn" as Wales is from Old English Welas, 
"foreigner."
