SR - Describing Our Region

Something to think about; a lot of place names are bastardized names
from other languages. Sierra Leon, for example, is supposedly Portugeuse
for "Lion Ridge". Well, the proper Portugeuse for Lion Ridge would be
Sierra dos Leon. Apparently the article was dropped for a a more
workable name.

South Country
French = du sud pays
German = Su:dland (again)
Italian = del sud paesa
Spanish = del sur pais

Hill Country
French = pays de colline
German = Hu:gelland
Italian = paesa della collina
Spanish = Pais de la colina

Dry lands
French = se`ches terres
German = trockene La:nder
Italian = asciutte terre
Spanish = secas pistas

Arid lands
French = arides terres
German = trockene La:nder (again)
Italian = aride terre
Spanish = a'ridas pistas

Not fully applicable, but for the hell of it how about desert:
French = de'sert
German = O:dland
Italian = deserto
Spanish = desierto

OK, OK, I'll quit for now. Oddly, I like quite a few of the German ones.
(Campoleone is still my fav, though.)
