Hi alll1
Sorry for the delayed reply , my internet's been wonky the last
couple of days.
Saint Philip mentioned metal pots, and period crockery; I'm
thinking the pottery sounds more likely for baking. The early
sheet-metal pots I've seen have all been designed for hanging,
rather than being set among the coals (IIRC the Mastermyr pot was
found because its hanging chain snagged a plow point), and the
round bottoms would mean a: things to be baked in a bowl could be
awkward to balance, and b:it would take a *huge* amount of embers
to get anything other than bottom heat- even if the kettles were
lidded (BTW, now that I think about it, I can't remember ever
seeing a lid for an early pot...anybody?), they're to high for
coals piled on top to do much good.
Stefan, first off, I just gotta say, bloody *awesome* site! I've
been going through it for about a week now, and I've only skimmed
through about 1/3 of the sections! Unfortunately, a proper oven
isn't on the cards anytime soon: I suspect the apartment
association would have words if I wereto buiild even a temporary one...
Anyway, in the "camp ovens" section, there
was a description of a "cloche oven" that looked like it might
have some possibilities-have to look into it some more, but I
wanted to respond to your replies before too much time had passed.
Fortunately, there are fire pits in the complex, so I can experiment...
Well, gotta get to work; thanks for responding! Dangle spits tonight or tomorrow morning...
Dan
