[Steppes] Fwd: [Ansteorra] Youthful Combatants

Incorrect assumption. Virtually any martial activity has some limited
participation between age groups. Golden Gloves boxing allows 16 and 17
year olds. THey're simply groupsed into their regular weight classes.
Judo, karate...all the same. I was participating as a 14 year old in adult
judo tournaments.

The legal issue is that there are written guidelines and safety percuations.
We have those things firmly in place. There will be no problem. CAN we get
sued? SURE! We CAN get sued because someone has a bad time at 12th Night.
But it's not likely they'll win.

Ask Sir Alexis if you'd be interested in relevant legal precedents in Texas
and Oklahoma. But I know for a fact that the international martial arts
organizations I'm a life member of have never been successfully sued in this
manner MERELY for a 16 or 17 year old being injured. The price is keeping a
constant eye on following your regulations.

The beauty of this rule, of course, is that a parent of a 16 and 17 year old
who DOES feel strongly that their child should not participate can keep
them from it. Since teh propopsed authorization process will require the
child to auth personally with the KINGDOM Earl Marshal at this point, that's
a pretty fine control.

Just my opinions, such as they are, not being the father of any child, but
was once that child. :) In fact, I didn't start in the SCA when I WANTED
to because the rules at the time required me to be 18. By the time I turned
18, I had lost interest.

Morgan
