[Steppes] Gate Issues

Local, I think, would be more effective in getting the message across for local events.  If I'm not mistaken (and I very well could be) the one at Round Table is more concerned with the paperwork and money issues, not attitudes and courtesy.

Every Round Table has a class on running gate and has for some time
ow. :)
Or do you mean a local class?

It has been a long time since I worked gate (and I'll make an effort
to change that), but when I did, we had the same problems, and your
 answer is absolutely on target.

Some of the other issues I've seen when I go to gate is that friends
of the people on gate are there keeping their friends company, and
they are so busy talking, they ignore those checking in.  Several
times I've had to be rather firm to get an answer to a reasonable
question, to get my change, to even be welcomed.  These should be
(along with keeping the paperwork up and the money secure) the main
 focuses of those working gate.

This sounds like an ideal opportunity to have "class" on serving as
 gate...

Working gate is like working retail, except the 'customer' is often
 exhausted
rom a long ordeal of packing up and driving to the site. While
 there is no
xcuse for rudeness there is often a reason, and those working the
 gate must try
o keep that in mind. While you are given stories of the 'customer'
 being rude,
here are an equal number of stories of the gate personnel being just
 as rude.
gain, there are reasons, but never excuses. Rudeness should be
 answered by
ourtesy, in most cases that will diffuse the situation, and at the
 very least
ill allow you to maintain your personal ethics and grace.
I do not believe that gate is a good job for very new people. As
 that one
erson said "they should have told you...."....new people might not
 have the
nowledge, experience or confidence to deal with the situations and
 questions
hat arise at gate, so many confrontations that could otherwise be
 avoided are
orced onto them. If new people are assigned to the gate, they
 should be
ccompanied by the most knowledgeable members available. This will
 help to
 void unpleasant situations.
I know, your next argument will be "we take who we can get,
 volunteers are hard
o come by." Absolutely true, and a separate issue we must struggle
 to
 vercome.
