7 and 40 are the most common numbers in the Bible.  7 is "God's number".  40 
is the "number of probation or trial."  At least, according to Biblical 
numerology.

10 is the number of completion or perfection in the Kabbala, where you 
return to the number 1.  Forty represents "four-fold perfection" or a 
movement from the material to the spiritual.
