[Sca-cooks] cucumbers

Lots of people make that mistake.  They seem to think that gourds, melons,
and cucumbers are all the same (or the same species), and people mix up the
histories of pumpkins, melons, other gourds, potatoes, and cucumbers.

So, no, cukes are definitely Old World. from the area North of India (or
from Northern India, depending on how you slice the regions).  Popular in
old China, the Ottoman Empire, old Rome (during the Empire), Europe, and so
on.

Remember, they're mentioned in the Bible.  That should be old enough for
most purposes.  Pliny and Apicius knew them.
