IIRC, tomato ketchup is a 19th Century concotion, but salsa di pomadoro all 
spagnuola appears in Antonio Latini's Lo scalo alla moderno of 1692 (thank 
you, Clifford Wright).  Now I want the recipe.  Pre-1600 tomato sauce, no 
evidence.

I think Latini was also mentioned in Grewes's earlier article on the tomato.
