I was told that Oz is Australia and the Oz is kind of from the way the "Aus"
in Australia is pronounced. A sort of verbal shorthand. Not from the book.

Is there a connection between the "Wizard of Oz" theme/story/mythical
land and New Zealand (Oz)?

Never been to either. I've only seen pictures of New Zealand and seen
the movie on TV (in black and white).
